Utah Beach, Normandy On June 6, 1944, the entire 4th Division Unit, including the 12th Infantry, landed on Utah Beach for the invasion of Normandy. This was Raymond’s first battle in the war after finishing combat training at Camp Shelby. The company would pass through Normandy and travel through Europe to ultimately land at Hurtgen Forest, Germany.
The 12th Infantry Regiment fought in five European campaigns through France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. The regiment was rewarded the Presidential Unit Citation for the courage and valor they showed at the bloody Battle of the Bulge. There, 4th Division would fight alongside the 8th, 9th, and 28th Divisions in Hurtgen Forest.
Hurtgen Forest, Germany In November 1944, American troops infiltrated Hurtgen Forest, Germany where the notable Battle of the Bulge would take place. Raymond’s regiment would enter the forest which was littered with mines and dangerous wildlife in early November.
Hurtgen Forest was one of the most dangerous places to be near the end of the second World War. From the myriad of land mines to the harsh weather conditions, this forest saw losses for both sides. German and Allied forces were concentrated here and separated by the forest. The battle at Hurtgen Forest was the longest battle of WWII on German soil. This is where Allied forces would push past the German home front and ultimately take Germany.
